Fishing Little River
Situated atop Lookout Mountain, Lazy River Cottage sits on the beautiful West Fork of Little River. It is not only the perfect place to hang out and enjoy time with family and friends, for the fishermen of all ages, it is a great place to spend time casting a line.
I’m not going to pretend to have great knowledge of all things fishing, but we’ve definitely enjoyed our share of time fishing with the kids on this beautiful river. Our kids have always loved fishing for brim.
We did find some great information for the more experienced angler to share about fishing our area of Little River from outdooralabama.com and alapark.com. This is where those with more experience have shared their knowledge of fishing this area.
Redeye Bass
Although Little River is home to a variety of fish, according to outdooralabama.com, “the fish of most interest to anglers is the redeye bass. Redeye bass are distinguished from other black bass by the white margins on the top and bottom of their tail fin. Redeye bass. Redeye bass readily take spinners, small crank baits, and flies. Largemouth bass, spotted bass, various sunfish (brim) and catfish also entertain Little River anglers.”
We do agree with outdooralabama.com when it comes to the challenges of fishing in the clear water of Little River. ”The clear water of the pristine Little River can make fishing relatively frustrating. During low flows of summer and fall, fish tend to spend more time hiding than actively feeding. To overcome this, successful anglers increase their catch rates by either fishing after a light or moderate rain, or fishing during low light conditions. Fly or light spinning tackle works well, as most of the Little River fish have relatively small mouths. Worms make excellent bait.“
For those of you wondering where to buy worms in the area, that one is a little more tricky. We have found the closest place to buy worms is just across the GA state line on HWY-117 at BJ’s gas station on your right. They have a small refrigerator with worms for purchase. It’s only about a 15 minute drive from Lazy River Cottage, so it’s not too far out of the way.
Fly Fishing
If you like fly fishing, you are in the right place. According to alapark.com, “fishing with spinning rod and bait casters is possible on Little River in DeSoto State Park, but the river is most suited for fly fishing”. They even map out when to fly fish.
When to Fly Fish
Spring – as the waters warm fish activity grows
Summer – Red eye bass and bluegill action is best
Fall – cooler temps begin to wind the fish down but fishing is still good
Winter – cold temps and high water make fishing a challenge
